Education is the heartbeat of our community, and nowhere is that more evident than in the Dallas County R-1 School District. In this edition of the Buffalo Area Chamber of Commerce Business Spotlight, we’re proud to highlight one of our Chamber members whose dedication to nurturing future leaders, fostering innovation, and building strong partnerships with local businesses goes far beyond the classroom. Their commitment strengthens the very fabric of our town. Buffalo thrives because of passionate entrepreneurs and dedicated neighbors who bring life and purpose to every aspect of our community—and the Dallas County R-1 School District stands at the center of that story.
The Dallas County R-1 School District ~ "The Home of the Bison"
As one of the largest employers in Dallas County, the Dallas County R-1 School District plays a vital role in both education and community life. Every day, the DCR-1 staff work to make a direct impact on nearly every family in the area. What makes their work meaningful is knowing that the lessons taught, relationships built, and opportunities created within our schools shape the future of Buffalo and the greater Dallas County community.
Led by Superintendent Dr. Laura O’Quinn and Assistant Superintendent Mr. Ben Potter, DCR-1's administrators, teachers, and staff ensure every student is supported, challenged, and inspired to reach their full potential.
Dallas County Schools History
Buffalo Schools, all grades, 1924-1925
This building was destroyed by fire in 1942. At the time of this photo, elementary grades were on the lower floors and Buffalo High School was on the top floor. The district’s beginnings are rooted in the many one-room schoolhouses that once served small communities across Dallas County. Over time—especially during the major reorganization efforts of the 1940s—those independent schools were consolidated into larger, unified districts. Dallas County R-1 is the product of that history: a collection of small neighborhood schools brought together to create a stronger, more connected system.
At one time, the district consisted of fifty-seven independent schools. Today, in partnership with the Dallas County Historical Society, DCR-1 is working to digitize records from those schools to preserve community history. That information can be found on the
Dallas County R-1 website. Building Futures
Serving 1,500 students across four campuses, Dallas County R-1 Schools offers preschool through 12th-grade education, as well as career and technical training through the Dallas County Technical Center (DCTC).
Recent facility improvements include the new DCTC building adjacent to Buffalo High School, upgrades to athletic facilities, and enhancements to the high school facade. Currently, five districts attend DCTC, with Wheatland joining in 2026-2027.
DCR-1 is committed to supporting every student, from the youngest learners to graduating seniors, with opportunities that prepare them for success in school and in life.
Beyond academics, DCR-1 partners with local businesses, non-profits, and neighboring schools to expand opportunities.
These collaborations align programs with workforce needs and strengthen support for families.
Bison Pride
The Dallas County R-I Hall of Fame celebrates alumni, educators, and community members who’ve made a lasting impact, reminding students they’re part of something bigger. This pride in tradition is matched by a commitment to innovation, with student feedback and job market trends guiding curriculum updates.
Looking Toward the Future
After a decade of strategic progress - including new buildings, safety measures, and facility upgrades - the district is now shaping its next 10-year plan. The focus is on financial stewardship, student attendance, and strong Tier 1 instruction.

Community members can support students through the Bison Booster Club and initiatives like Bison Blessings, which helps reduce lunch debt and provides warm meals for learners facing homelessness or unmet needs.
