The Southwest Missouri Celtic Heritage Festival & Highland Games is an annual tradition in Buffalo, Missouri, honoring the vibrant legacy of the Celtic peoples who settled the Buffalo Head Prairie. These settlers came from regions known collectively as the Celtic nations—Brittany (Breizh), Cornwall (Kernow), Wales (Cymru), Scotland (Alba), Ireland (Éire), and the Isle of Man (Mannin or Ellan Vannin)—and played a significant role in the formation of Buffalo and the surrounding area.
Held the weekend after Labor Day at the Buffalo City Park/Dallas County Fairgrounds on Ramsey Street, the festival has been a cherished family-friendly cultural event for over 20 years, hosted by the Buffalo Area Chamber of Commerce.

The Highland Games are a cornerstone of the festival, featuring traditional athletic events where both men and women compete in events such as:
Whether you're a seasoned athlete or a first-time spectator, these competitions showcase strength, skill, and centuries-old tradition.
The festival began in 2002, thanks to the inspiration and dedication of local resident Monty Viets. While researching his own genealogy, Viets discovered Clan Montgomery, whose lineage stretches back to Viking Normandy, Celtic Wales, and Scotland. His journey led him to Celtic festivals in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and St. Louis, which inspired him to envision a similar celebration in Buffalo.
With support from the Buffalo Area Chamber of Commerce and the Buffalo Optimist Club, the inaugural Southwest Missouri Celtic Heritage Festival & Highland Games became a reality—celebrating heritage, community, and cultural pride.
